li Baré is an award-winning director, writer and producer who has worked on over 50 hours of documentary and factual programming in the US, the UK and Australia. Her work has been variously reviewed as ‘extraordinary … powerful and potent, a real emotional revelation’; ‘brave and essential viewing’ and ‘unforgettable’. She is currently based in Sydney, Australia.
Her documentary The Secret Life of Breasts won the US Cine Golden Eagle Award for Environment & Science in 2015. Her one-off documentary The Silent Epidemic won an ATOM award and the Mental Health Media Achievement Award in 2011. She was a finalist in the 2010 Australian Directors’ Guild Awards for her work on Are You My Mother?, and she has also been nominated for the UN Media Peace Award and the prestigious Eureka Prize for Science Communication and Journalism.
She is particularly interested in understanding the decisions and context that determine a person’s life course, and this empathy for her characters is a hallmark of her work. Her programs span history, science, genealogy and social issues. Ili’s work as a documentary director has seen her uncover stories in the US, the UK, Italy, The Philippines and Australia.
Ili is currently working on a science documentary series for production company The Feds.
